Intelligence Turning now from cognitive level to the possible role of rate of cognitive development, we consider studies in which intelligence was examined as a potential mediator of therapy outcomes with children. One rationale for such a mediating role flows directly from the nature of the IQ score. As originally construed, IQ was a measure of the extent to which information or skill (originally expressed in terms of mental age units) has been acquired relative to the time spent in acquisition (expressed in years and months of chronological age).
